Notes for James MOSHER
James Mosher and his wife Lydia were among the first of the 'New
England Planters' to inhabit the Fundy Coast in Nova Scotia. They
sailed on the Sloop Lydia with 6 of their children from Newport,
Rhode Island to Newport, Nova Scotia in May, 1760 where his
occupation was millwright.
"On 12 October 1758, Goveror Charles Lawrence issued a proclamation
to the people of New England inviting them to settle the fertile Nova
Scotian farmland that had lain vacant since the Acadian deportation.
By 1768, approximately 8,000 New Englanders, known as the 'Planters',
had made the move. In the process, Nova Scotia was permanently
transformed." (Media Plan Concept, Parks Canada)
