The Berry Family
of Cumberland County, Nova Scotia

The earliest authentic record of the Nova Scotia Berrys is found in the archives at Halifax, in the Crown Lands office which states that in the Grant of Amherst township dated October 31st, 1765 is included the name of Robert Berry, who came from the north of Ireland with his wife and three children, (there is no record of who his wife was). They settled on their grant in Amherst, where they had their other children born, all born previous to 1770. There were two sons and four daughters. The only one of this family that we have any record of at present is Thomas Berry. He was the eldest son of the family, and was married to Mary Scott in Amherst August 23rd, 1781 by Rev. James Murdoch, presby. Their marriage certificate is still in existance and in possession of one of their descendants. It reads as follows: "Thomas Berry and Mary Scott were joined in the holy bonds of Matrimony in Amherst Nova Scotia on the 23rd day of August A.D. 1781, by Rev James Murdoch, presbyterian." They settled in Amherst, where their family were born. They then moved to Two Islands, Parrsboro, where they died. The old homstead is now (1957) occupied by Albert Berry, one of their great grandsons. Thomas Berry and Mary Scott had four sons and seven daughters.
