Ralph Sydney Ward
Family Story

Simon Ward was born abt 1755 in England (fairly certain that he was the son of Simon WARD and Sarah COLLING of Marske near Richmond in the North Riding, Yorkshire).
Sometime shortly before 1785, Simon arrived in Nova Scotia, Canada and purchased land in Newport, Hants County. In the 1817 Hants County census, Simon is the head of a household of 6. 1 English born, 5 Nova Scotia born. Simon is the 1 English born.

Simon married Rhoda Mosher around 1885. (parents James Mosher and Lydia Allen) was born abt 1762 in Newport, Hants County, NS.
Rhoda's father James Mosher was born July 12, 1725 in Tiverton, Rhode Island.

Painting of the Sloops 'Lydia' and 'Sally'

James Mosher and his wife Lydia married Oct 28, 1748 at Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts and were among the first of the 'New England Planters' to inhabit the Fundy Coast in Nova Scotia. They sailed from Newport, Rhode Island on the Sloop Lydia (shown in the painting above) with their first 6 children and landed at Newport, Nova Scotia in May, 1760 where his occupation was millwright. He died 1822 in Newport, Hants County, NS.

"On 12 October 1758, Governor Charles Lawrence issued a proclamation to the people of New England inviting them to settle the fertile Nova Scotian farmland that had lain vacant since the Acadian deportation. By 1768, approximately 8,000 New Englanders, known as the 'Planters', had made the move. In the process, Nova Scotia was permanently transformed."

Rhoda could have been the first child born to James and Lydia after moving from Rhode Island to Nova Scotia. Likely they named her after their native Rhode Island.

Amy Ward .. daughter of Nicholas & Sarah Ward
    Died Dec 15, 1851 Aged 6 years
By her age when she died, compared with the date of Nicholas and Sarah's marriage in 1850, we can only conclude that Sarah is Nicholas' second wife (possibly a sister of his first wife.. maybe Mary Maria Caldwell) and Amy (and also Mary Maria) are children of the first marriage.
